PSX Music Maker
A downloadable tool for Windows
I wanted PS1 music for my own low poly games. Not 8-bit chiptune, which is what most music generators make, but that soft, a bit crunchy sound of the real PlayStation. The kind of music you remember from Silent Hill, Tekken 3 or Spider-Man. I couldn't find a simple tool for it, so I made one :]
Pay once and that's it :]
No subscription, no AI tokens, no account. You buy it once and make as many loops as you want, even offline. And the app itself doesn't use any AI: the music comes from hand-made composing rules and a sound chip emulation, nothing is trained on anyone's music.
You pick a vibe, press Generate and get 4 new loops on 4 memory cards. Listen to them, reroll the ones you don't like and save the ones you love. No complex music software, no sliders everywhere, no music theory needed. The app does the composing for you, and it follows rules, so every roll sounds like music and not like random notes.
Your loops are yours. Use them in your games, videos and streams, commercial ones too. No credit needed. You can even edit the tracks and sell them, as your game soundtrack or as a music pack. The only thing I ask: please don't share or sell the app itself.
12 vibes to start with
Racing, fighting, action, horror, military, RPG town, dungeon, jungle, platformer, menu, big beat and bubbly. Each one can sound darker or brighter, calmer or more driving, dry or with a big PS1 reverb. My personal favourites are horror and jungle.
The Hardware knob
This is the part I'm most proud of. The PS1 had no synth chip. It played small compressed sound samples through its sound chip (the SPU) and added its own hardware reverb. PSX Music Maker emulates that chip: the same 4-bit ADPCM compression, the same "gaussian" interpolation and the real reverb presets. Turn Hardware from MODERN to PS1 and the same song is played again the way a real console would play it. Honestly, sometimes I like the PS1 version more.
What you get
WAV files (16-bit, 44.1 kHz, stereo) that loop seamlessly. The loop points are saved inside the file too, so engines like Godot loop them on their own. The app runs on Windows, it's one exe, nothing to install. You can use mouse, keyboard or a gamepad (Xbox or PlayStation style), and the button hints on screen change to whatever you use.
More vibes are coming in free updates. If you have an idea for a vibe or a feature, write it in the comments. I read every one :]
If you also need trees for your game, take a look at my other app: Instant Tree Maker.
Big thanks to the psx-spx documentation project. Without their notes on the PS1 sound chip, the emulation wouldn't be possible.
